WHATEVER THE ROUTE, IT ALL STARTS WITH THE DESIRE TO DISCOVER

In the midst of Bike Month, we present our short interview with Jonathan B. Roy, bicycle globe-trotter.

Who hasn't heard of Jonathan B. Roy? Roy, a native of the Prescott-Russell region who has traveled over 40,000 kilometers around the world? If we haven't seen him on TV, we've read the dozens of articles about him, heard him on the radio or read one of his two books (Histoires à dormir dehors, volume 1 and 2).

What's interesting about his journey is the starting point he has in common with hundreds of other people. Without being a professional cyclist, he embarked (not without preparation) on an adventure that took him from discovery to discovery around the globe.

I like to think that if you can ride for a day and stop in the evening with the aim of setting off again the next day, you're capable of cycling around the world. On the other hand, I always say to people who ask me: don't set out with the aim of cycling around the world. Start by exploring your region, your surroundings. Discover yourself as a cyclist, learn to recognize your limits. Minor equipment shortcomings shouldn't stop you from attempting the adventure, whether it's brief or ambitious. Because, at the end of the day, no matter what the route, the important thing is to dare to discover this sport, to put yourself in a state of open-mindedness.

This sport, which brings together young and old alike, requires no expertise and very little equipment. To this end, Jonathan advises people who want to get into cycling a little more to use the bike they already own, modifying it if necessary to improve certain aspects in terms of comfort.

More specifically, he recommends wide tires with lower pressure to absorb road irregularities. At the crankset level, clip-on pedals or wider pedals to spread the weight over the whole foot are also judicious modifications that cyclists keen to achieve a better experience can make to their bike.

A question of mindset, but also of rhythm

As he has already said at conferences, the pace of cycling is his favorite, since it's not as accelerated as that of the car or motorcycle, and less physically tiring than walking or running.

Cycling also brings generosity. It may sound strange when you put it that way, but people are more sensitive to your reality when you're a cyclist. They ask you questions, offer you a place to rest, help, water, food and accommodation. Cycling gives you access to people and allows you to meet them.

Wherever Jonathan has gone, he has seen that cycling is much more than just a means of transport or a sporting activity. It's a gateway to adventure and discovery, and a way to forge unique bonds with the people you meet along the way.

Jonathan encourages cycling enthusiasts to find out about bike clubs and take advantage of marked trails, such as the Prescott-Russell Recreational Trail. This trail offers an unforgettable experience, allowing cyclists to connect with nature while exploring the region's magnificent landscapes.

The advantage of the recreational trail is that it's very safe and flat. For beginners or less-experienced cyclists, these are perfect conditions for first, slightly longer road experiences.

Our globe-trotting cyclist underlines the importance of the cycling community in the Prescott-Russell region. Cycling enthusiasts regularly gather for group outings, sporting events and friendly competitions. It's the perfect opportunity to meet other cyclists, exchange tips and share unique experiences.

We all started from the same point, i.e. as beginners. You become experienced and knowledgeable as you ride more and more, try out different routes, meet new people and apply tips and tricks. There's no magic, just practice and lots of fun!

So, whether you're a resident of the Prescott-Russell region or a visitor just passing through, cycling on marked trails like the Prescott-Russell Recreational Trail is an experience not to be missed. It's an opportunity to experience adventure, connect with nature and discover the hidden treasures of this magnificent region. Whether you're a beginner or a long-time enthusiast, cycling awaits you, ready to offer you unforgettable moments of happiness, discovery and sharing. And who knows, maybe this will be the start of a new trip that extends beyond the region!
